I've had a mega-inspiring week leading yoga for Zibby Retreats and Andrea Dunlop's book launch for her newest, Women are the Fiercest Creatures, that we are reading for Strala Reads (everyone is invited). After yoga, women from all different backgrounds shared with me their experience and wow, were they varied and powerful.
These private conversations ranged from someone having a big mental release, an emotional weight lifted, a trauma moved through, a physical tightness unlocked, the realization that they could do more physically then they thought possible, to a feeling of being excited to do yoga, after years of being discouraged and feeling like you have to be able to touch your toes and fit in some idealized mold to practice. I love our practice, but not much gets me more excited than to hear what people want to share about themselves, after.
The uniqueness of these women was so cool. All the trees are different, making the forest interesting. Life would be so boring if we were all the same.
We see so many filtered workouts that proclaim a mind-body connection, while showing perfect pony tails, matching barely-there sets, one physical body shape, and looking 25 forever as ideal. It's easy to get discouraged and a little frustrated. It happens to me too. It's no one's fault really, it's where our culture is right now. But we can change this.
I feel this move to change away from superficiality is our next round of evolution. I'm so grateful to have spent time with the fabulous Paulina Porizkova who shares everything I'm trying to get at here so elegantly in her book, No Filter. Practicing yoga with ease will always be in style because it's about connecting with yourself, releasing the tension that gets stuck, revealing a vibrant body with a range of motion and physical strength that supports your life, and focuses your mental capacity to bring out your fierceness into the world. I've gotten lots of requests for more Chair Yoga, so it got me thinking, yeah, it's nice to take a break from work and connect your breath and body right from your chair. Do it. It's also nice to bring together those in your life who are mostly or maybe all the time, not by choice, in a chair.
If you can breathe you can do yoga. I spent the last few years leading yoga and shiatsu with my dad in his chair. I couldn't fix him, but I could be with him and be with myself. Some pretty awesome things happen out of this action. I hope you share this video with those people who come to mind, and better yet, do it together.
